Sanitary, Humane, and Workable for all Inhabitants
The Mayfield Animal Services Center is an institutional project by definition. Owned and operated by a Joint Powers Authority that includes the County of Stanislaus and 6 independent cities, the facility comprises over 34,000 sf, the majority being animal holding areas. The facility itself is a testament to the special needs of its use. The facility can accommodate over 400 dogs and 200 cats. During the design of the facility several specialty consultants were utilized to ensure a sanitary, humane and workable environment for all inhabitants of the facility, both animal and human.
An acoustical study was commissioned to determine the potential noise levels within the facility. What was found was that the preliminary noise level could approach 115 db., louder than a jet taking off. The solution was to install sound-wall breaks within the holding rooms, to help prevent the transmission of sound and “rolling barking” to adjacent holding areas as well as the staff areas. In addition, sound
absorbing material was placed on the ceilings, helping to lower the overall noise level by half.
An interactive corridor was created as a specialized place were people can interact with their prospective pets and acts as the “sign post” for way-finding in the facility. The facility also has a fully functioning veterinary clinic complete with operating suites. The facility boasts over 50 skylights to provide daylight illumination.
